Mark Down Director
The Table (Edinburgh Festival)
Mark Down is director specializing in making extraordinary theatre with puppets. He trained as an actor at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. He is the Artistic Director Blind Summit Theatre. For Blind Summit he writes, directs, designs and performs puppetry in theatre, opera, dance, film and the outdoors. He has been pioneering his own style of 'extreme' puppetry: a character led, improvisational reinvention of traditional Japanese Bunraku technique. He writes and directs Blind Summit's productions, including THE TABLE and CITIZEN PUPPET which have won multiple awards throughout the world including a Fringe Firsts, "Grand Prix” awards in Spain and Poland, and collaborates to create breath-taking puppetry in large-scale collaborations including Anthony Minghella's MADAM BUTTERFLY at the Met Opera, Simon McBurney's A DOG'S HEART at DNO and La Scala, Danny Boyle's LONDON OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY, David Pountney's MAGIC FLUTE on the lake stage at Bregenz. Mark directed his first opera, Stravinsky's LE ROSSIGNOL at the Bregenz Festival. In 2019 he will direct Peter And The Wolf with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl
